Russian (m, 27), was living in Europe since 2011, when first came to study. mom, whole family is of Ukrainian descent, still have a lot of relatives, that still live there, but mainly are just scattered around the globe, with mom living in Russia and some family members living in the same city as terrified, guys. terrified of what will happen with mom (she lives in Russia), what this war, the economic and political consequences of will do to family (things were already fucked up with the covid restrictions, when weren't able to see each other for half a year). afraid of what will happen with relatives that are still in Ukraine, just afraid, because there's nothing can do to help, except to welcome here of decide to leave. afraid of what will happen to the world, coz God be witness, just want a fucking peace and prosperity for everyone, not this military shit and crisis. 's already been hard these past years, and now this. Sorry for this rant, seems that Reddit is more sane than the rest of the world. Wish all to be safe!

Hey folks. All the major Ukrainian cities were shelled today at 5 am Kyiv time by Russian forces. targeted ammunition warehouses. woke up to the sound of explosions. (Dnipro city). The are panicking. still can't believe 's possible in the 21st century. lost grandma a day ago (due to old age). Don't know what will happen to body ( was on the way to be cremated in another city). Every day wake up to the darker and darker news, seems. Please, nudge government toward helping if 's possible, don't ignore the thing. Missiles in European cities are no joke. a digital artist by trade and a young male. hope won't be the end of friends and craft. 's surreal for as a slav to see the war. heard about from the grandparents, but seeing Russians do this to is on another level. an atheist but pray for . the same as . Ukrainians want freedom and democracy and the clear skies above heads. Hope in the future still be able to draw something for all of who stand for freedom. has become too real a thing for here.

Well, guess this is then. Sirens are wailing all over Lviv. couldn't run away from problems no matter how hard tried. All those years of suffering and depression - lived through only to get the worst hand dealt ever.
And yet - don't want to escape. Fuck that. was a coward whole life - but now gets personal. For today, wasting with friend with as much alcohol as possible. To forget what's happening for at least one more day. Then, like said in previous post on this subreddit, joining the army.

Local here. All major cities airports got bombed (w/missiles), borders are overwhelmed with ppl willing to leave (16-18hrs in lane). Leaving cities and moving between states (oblast) is hard, since lack of transport and being heavily overloaded. More of that all military obliged cant leave without informing and getting papers signed by military registration and enlistment office. can't leave counry. Ukraine is in the war situation. This day brought a hell of a morning (5:00 was like five hours ago). fully understand OP. hope gets better. Shocking times could bring back to life, just wish to literally stay alive. God bless .

Guys don't know what to do, 's so scary to be here. woke up at 7 am because of the sirens wailing. parents are sitting in the kitchen and discussing what to do and where to go. are running towards the roads to the west, 's panic all over the city.
Tbh scared no less than these . and family don't have any place to go. really don't know what to do. The TV says that 5 cities are attacked at the same time, so got nowhere to go. 's just a matter of like 10-12 hours till bomb the airports. very scared

Ukrainian and whole family lives there. And right at this moment Russia is bombing cities and troops are invading land. This is a completely unprovoked and insane act of aggression that became possible thanks to a madman - Putin.
All this could have been prevented if after invasion of Georgia in 2008 and Crimea and Donbas region in 2014 the west democracies applied tough sanctions and political/economical pressure on Russia instead of appeasement and “business as usual”.
If someone thinks that after Ukraine Putin will stop, are oblivious. will invade Georgia, Moldova, Finland, Sweden (because are not NATO member) etc. In other words, go further until stopped as Hitler was.
This might sound crazy to now, but many didn’t believe in full-scale invasion of Ukraine just a day ago. This is a new world all live now. And this new world has overlooked the rise of a new fascist dictatorship - Putin’s Russia.
Will this affect life if live in EU or America? Yes, will. Millions of refugees is the least that will happen.
Can something been done to help Ukraine and prevent future invasions? Yes! And even can do part:
write/call elected politicians and ask to take tough approach on Russian latest actions, business with Russian entities, and dirty Russian money in country;
take part in local public manifestation against the war in Ukraine (but be peaceful and stay safe, Covid is no joke);
don’t vote for politicians that are rooting for dialog with Russia or want to be friends with Putin. This understands and respects only strength.
What Ukraine needs right now is West to be united and strong. No more deep concerns and condemnations. Only tough sanctions. also need weapons. don’t ask troops to fight for . But when Ukraine gave up nuclear weapons in 1994, was promised help from the US, the UK and (ironically) Russia in case of danger to sovereignty. And some modern weapons to help stand for homeland.
’s not about Ukraine anymore. ’s about democracy and freedom in Europe and whole World.

Our university kept giving statements absolving of any responsibility. told if wanted to go back home would do online classes and come back in two weeks when situation calmed down. Also told ukraine crisis was fake news. Warned if missed classes while here, ’s responsibility to solve or get expelled. With finals looming many contemplated leaving. Well today decided to skip classes and sleep at home and when woke up, see university students panicking, teachers telling to calm down. The Russians bombed/ shelled/ did bs on the city of dnipro and heard, also on Odessa. The state of emergency is declared and transportation and airports will also come to halt. Basically going to be stuck in this bs like dad was stuck in the middle of saddam’s invasion of Kuwait.
Update1: went out. Damn, everywhere. The nearby pharmacy has a long queue outside of . Went to the grocery store (ATB for Ukrainians), ’s jam packed. ran out of chickens, rice, grechka most of the cheese is gone, plenty of onions but look terrible, the bread shelves are empty, the bakery got baguettes so took 2, 2x croissants, 2x milk bottle, 3x hummus, 2x cornflakes, 4x apples and a packet of rice- price shot up. paid 514 what typically would cost 350 Some are shopping and going back to homes. Others are loading up car and preparing to leave.

These c*unts hit airports, ammo depots, anti-aircraft batteries and eventually invaded from several border regions and unlawfully occupied Crimea, Donbass and BELARUS (which is a totally different country). is not just the Putin who is the enemy but the whole Russian nation as well as lapdog Lukashenko (the self proclaimed president of Belarus) and . are silent, do nothing, behave like slaves whom are and will be forever unless rise. armed forces will not give an inch of land willingly and if need be, will do the way did with Nazis, will become guerrillas and hit where can. is crazy how many support Putin's actions in Russia, young and old... Geez wife's aunt in Russia thinks is OK to terrorize and kill to return Ukraine to the brotherly embrace of Russia! This is really sad... My hands are shaking as type this in. have no idea how there'll be internet or how long will be here to constantly update this post. The explosions are getting closer.
It is ironic. never thought the "eulogy" part from bio would come true, but here are.
will record every event witness and go through during this invasion and forever store on the blockchain.
It could end up being an incomplete record, and in that way will turn into part of eulogy.
Woke up to a shaking room with shocking, loud, explosion like sounds at sharp 5:00 A.M.
A barrage of calls and messages floods phone as try to put things together (but deep inside already knew what has happened)
look out the window and can see clear streaks left by missiles or projectiles on the sky, followed by a faint remenescent of smoke coming from the site of impact.
After that was almost an hour of calling around, replying texts, and scrounging the internet for more information.
None of the news outlets had anything posted about these sudden explosions, but think all the residents already knew what had begun.
Decided the best route of action was to gather essential items and head out for the western side of Ukraine.
Started looking for available bus tickets, train tickets, and cabs.
Everything is either sold out, or getting removed as quickly as get listed.
Have another hour long discussion with friends and family about viable options while packing.
Go out to the Train Station in person as can't find tickets online and also gather information.
It is complete chaos outside. Everyone is running. Where? don't know.
Someone has 1 bag, some 3, some none. Some Babushkas are crying as run, some children are crying as hug mother's shivering hand tightly, some running around like a headless chicken with no specific goal in mind. That was a scary view.
Immediately the first thing that caught eye was the huge queues at the ATMs. A wave of flashbacks from 2014 hit
Another set of huge queues at the water terminals and storefronts. Big sign of things about to go from bad to worse.
Metro working as usual. The screaming "wear masks!". Made chuckle. Inside the station were with bags, luggage, and some with pets, all heading towards the train and bus stations.
The train station was another kick of reality on the shin. More than could even see. All gathered around the ticket booths, some shouting over lungs, some on calls, some weeping on the sides.
Walked towards the bus station where a similar view welcomed No bus tickets available. Private buses are booked. "Money doesn't matter anymore", that is what one of the drivers told when told had 15 ready to pay any amount to get out.
Looked for private cabs and more options, gave up after getting "no" from everywhere and the crowd only kept getting bigger.
Now is 8:30 AM, only 3 and a half hours after the first explosion. There are officially no more buses and trains leaving to western Ukraine for the next 2 days.
Get a call talking about water shortages happening around the city. Head to the metro to find water cans without the queues.
In the metro see water fountains being installed as well as extra benches. The underground metro stations are being turned into bunkers.
Lots of inside the metro. 5x the normal. A lot of weeping kids, scared parents, fragile old , lost passengers. All of taking shelter and looking for answers inside. Also, metro and other transportations are declared free and without fare.
Head to one the busiest places in the city to only find completely deserted. A scary view.
All shops and businesses are closed. Including supermarkets and grocery stores. ATMs still have a huge queue.
Seeing a lot of police officers and armed soldiers on the street and in the metro stations.
want to make a final few purchases to store at home since be stuck there for who knows how long. But the queues are very big.
are fighting to get inside. Shelves are emptying by the second. Managed to get a couple of bottles of water.
Reached home safely. A lot of disappointed coming back, too.
Sounds of explosions begin again. Streets are now empty and whatever few are remaining out there are running to find shelter.
News emerges of tanks infiltrating the border and making way into the city. A few buildings have been destroyed and are firing indiscriminately.
Sounds of explosions have become louder now. think are coming closer and closer.
have mapped out all the bunkers in the area and am going through the signals. One beep = warning. three beeps = evacuate and hide in shelters.
Another set of explosive sounds. This was very close. Felt room shake.
Contacted the embassy but no realistic solution or guidance is being provided.
Another explosion. Can see the smoke directly from window. Closest one yet.
Ex-landlord now a good friend called. is worse than the Twitter trolls. Thinks the shelling is a made up conspiracy. Bruh can feel them! can see the smoke!
Considering going to the bunker. But 's overcrowded and worried about thieves and looters.
Made to a bunker under the building. More are coming through. A few explosions can be heard outside. No clue what's goin on.
Everything is quite for now. Curfew has been imposed. Fear and anxiety is rising among some , including , naturally.
Six continous explosions have shooken the place up.
A lot more are rushing underground and bringing pets along.
Some more have joined in the bunker. say explosions are frequent and very nearby. Hoping for the best.
It's cold. Very cold. There's no heating down here and not enough blankets to go around.
Trying best to catch some sleep. Who knows when will get another chance to. However, feels impossible. Can't sleep a wink. cold and scared.
Exactly 24 hours have passed since the beginning of the invasion. Tensions are high as rumors of a air strike is passing around.

Looks like there may be a train that goes to Lviv. However, is not certain if moving by train will be safe or not. But is a risk am ready to take.
Contacting other who are stuck here and want to leave.
Many are heading towards the train stations are there are rumors emerging of trains arriving and leaving.
Have to drop the idea of traveling now since got some news about Lviv not being the safest place as of now and also the Poland border isn't letting in yet.
Went out to look for a working ATM since need more cash in hands.
have decided to nest all the younger citizens of country stuck in Kharkiv under wing. are all heading towards location now.
What beautiful weather! Something that finally gives some peace. Fewer outside than yesterday. No one's walking, everyone's jogging.
Unfortunately, most of the ATMs are still closed or do not have money in them. In total, have walked to check 7 ATMs.
There are a few newly formed entrepreneurs on the street standing next to the ATMs. They'll give cash if transfer money into accounts for a 10% "service charge".
Finally found a working ATM with cash in . Huge queue but worth the wait.

From 26th Feb to 2nd March
After doing all could do, decided to get out of Ukraine. The original plan was to take the morning train from Kharkiv railway station to Lviv and from thee figure out the rest. was well aware could have to walk 30 kms to the border in the freezing cold but was better than dying like a sitting duck.
reached the station late, there were sounds of explosions. had to wait for the noon train which would either stop at kiev and would have to take another train to lviv, or the train would go Uzhgorod. Nothing was clear.
There were mostly foreigners on the platform. Some familiar faces, a lot of who knew directly or indirectly, and many that hadn't seen before.
Everyone was standing, although the train still had hours to make to the platform. Obviously everyone was anxious and scared. found a group of friends who eventually decided to make the risky drive to the border instead of waiting. In retrospect, was probably a bad decision.
If took the train would directly reach Lviv or Uzhgorod and could find a way to make to the border. All would take was a few hours of waiting, and after leaving the train a few hours of trying to get to the border.
Going by car was riskier because there was no guarantee would ever make . didn't know which routes were safe and how would drive almost 1700 km.
started strong. were scared. However, almost on every major street came across check posts guarded by the army and the general mobilization. checked cars, documents and let go.
This was very good. were there to recommend safe routes and tell what to avoid and how to go. Some stations only had the general public who were not army but volunteered into the general mobilization. were holding rifles with pretty much nothing else. But could feel intense will power.
On the road saw a lot of things. There were times could hear shilling not too far away from the road and even feel the vibrations. also saw a burning vehicle which wasn't shot too long ago. was scary. Every minute of .
The cars were all crowded. For most of the part was sitting on a suitcase. was very uncomfortable and having so many in the group made worse. had to constantly take breaks for fuel, bathrooms, energy and so on.
On the night of 27th had to take a huge break. All of were very exhausted. Almost impossible to keep eyes opened. decided to take a break when reached what was then considered a "safe" city.
To reach this city were guided to go through a "back road". Basically was a cleared road through a forest that didnt exist on the map. was a very rough road and were told to go as fast as possible. thought car would break into pieces there.
After reaching the city however, couldn't find a place to rest. So rang up the emergency number and did find a place for us.

Through a very clever security clearance system of multiple layers through calls were directed to a shelter not too far away from Kyiv. Kyiv was then the main focus of all attacks.
did think were safe. But no. friend and stepped out of the shelter for namaaz when saw a fighter plane fly right over heads. In the dark was impossible to say which side the plane belonged to.
Not too long after the sounds of shelling and airstrikes filled the air. At around 2 am, woke up completely paralyzed. An unending constant sound of airstrike or shelling or shooting filled the air. went on for almost 30 minutes and was paralyzed thinking this was . am going to die now.
Next morning discussed and decided the noises were richoceting from Kyiv. then recouped and continued the journey.
The routes used to reach until this point were now closing up. Turns out the attack was getting bigger and harder and the roads were getting affected. The would have to find different routes now.
reached around 300 km close to the border from Lviv. decided to buy some water from a shop nearby. decided to go to the washroom. Suddenly the sirens went up. There were a lot of shouting voices telling everyone to leave.
all went outside hurrily as the screamed in fear and children cried loudly. stood in the parking of the shop. All of us. Under open sky. With an imminent air strike on way. Can imagine what that felt like?
stood there in a group. Maybe a hundred . No one left the parking with cars since the roads are a bigger risk. No one went inside the shop since could collapse on the head. So the open parking was the only relatively safer option.
After a very long 20 minutes which felt like a lifetime ended, were told safe now. forgot about the water and straight started driving again.
again reached a road which was packed. was about 7 kms long but took 30 minutes to clear through. After cleared that road were told to go through a village as the road ahead was overpacked.This was another rough road but better than not moving at all.
As got closer to the border area the checking in the check posts got more thorough. took time to see through the documents and check cars.
Finally, almost one whole day of driving reached within 50 km of the border. But wasn't easy. From night till the next morning only cleared 15 km as the line of cars was moving very slowly.
Then there was another check point after which another long line of cars. were swapping drivers every few hours to keep energy up. But eventually were 30 km away from the border.
This was the line of cars that was both a relief and scary. heard rumors of this line taking anywhere from 2 days to a week to clear. There were also rumors of the army picking out from the line (all is bs as none of this happened). So were pretty scared.
There was no way of understanding why the line was taking so long. Only after crossed the border realized. That 30 km. will forever be imprinted in brain. The shit have seen there. cant forget. am tearing up just thinking about .
All the cars were told to drive on the extreme right hand side to leave space for "emergency vehicles" in the middle of the two laned road. There were polite, army, ambulance, luxury vans, and some private cars with police escort rushing through that space. was hard to understand what the private cars and vans had that could pass through the special lane.
Tensions were very high and were emotional and impatient. There were 3 instances were cars tried to cut in front of us. The cool thing was, even if were foreigner and the line cutters were locals, the locals came to help and together successfully made drive all the way back.
But after cleared 1 km and reached a check point the real scary things began showing up. Taxis and some mini-vans carrying passenger were not being allowed further. The passengers were now forced to walk all the 30 kms to the border. In the cold.
also caught glimpses of empty cars being driven away from the border by Ukrainian with tears in eyes. could only guess that dropped family on the border and were driving back to join the army.
also saw many , including locals and foreigners walking towards the border on foot after being told taxis/vans cant get in. The worst thing saw was a family of four with the youngest not older than5 year old walking. Saw another foreigner whos luggage handle was broken and the wheels were gone. tied a piece of cloth to the luggage and dragged .
got tired of all this waiting and with a mixed emotion of anger, frustration and exhaustion approached a police officer what was going on. looked at with a smile and put hand on shoulder and said the cars going through the middle were either emergency vehicles, with special needs, and delegations/dignitaries and that everyone would be let out just had to wait a little longer. Somehow was shocked that responded to so nicely given approach. But think seen many like
That last 30 km took 1 and a half day to cross. Theres one last small town between the long stretch and the final stretch. stopped there to exchange Ukrainian UAH for PLN. could only get 100 USD and 100 PLN. Sucks, but better than nothing.
The last stretch was 7km long. All along the final 30 km were Ukrainians who had set up stalls for free food and water. was incredible how much the were helping each other. There were running around with pampers for those who needed. was incredible to see all that. Hot tea and coffee, soup, pirojki, water. Anything and everything to make the last 30 km a little easier.
Just 5 km away from the border was the last check point. A huge group of that came walking were waiting there to be cleared to go through the 5km into the immigration. Most of had the look of death on face. do not know how did make . But did. On foot. In the cold. Some were sitting, some still standing, some lying on the floor out of exhaustion.
stopped there for a bit as recouped and distributed the free tea to the that walked there. . cant think of all this forget writing forever on the blockchain. These memories are so disturbing. But yeah, distributed tea, gave away some of UAH to the volunteers and drove to the immigration.
The immigration was smooth but took some time. At a time just about 4 cars can pass through the immigration. And the same on the Polish side. Then there are the walkers. had to be cleared to. Only now was clear why the lines were so long and slow.
On March 1st, a journey that began on 26th February finally came to and end. cleared the immigration and were finally inside Poland.

Hello from Vienna!! Local Ukrainian church just called, want to house 2 women and 3 kids beginning on Monday. Since know very little about Ukraine or Ukrainian customs wanted to ask folks if there is anything in particular should know or be aware of. Was thinking of buying some chocolates and maybe finding old Gameboy advance (don't really have any other console since sadly gave away the wii a few years ago..) for the kids, but other than that not really full of ideas or knowledge what to expect.

been fighting the Russian occupiers for more than two weeks now. Multiple war crimes committed, maternity house destroyed with Russians clearly planning this strike beforehand to blame us, and the West is still hesitant to provide with lethal weapons. Because, know, the WAR, not like there's a war already, but more of a genocide, might start. Like 's not happening already.
Let tell something - even if fall, even if Ukraine is betrayed by the West and given up like Czechoslovakia once was - Putin won't stop. Just like Hitler didn't, because wants to conquer all of the past Warsaw pact states. Because only by 'small victorious wars' like call (Russo-Japanese war for example) can distract from what's happening inside country. Because wants a buffer zone from the NATO, which, to belief, isn't even a threat or strong enough and would gladly surrender the Baltics too. Just because 'don't want the nuclear war'. And feels like the West will continue giving up countries and appeasing Putin, fearing the nuclear war. But the truth is, nothing stops Putin from sending the nukes. No amount of appeasement will quench thirst for war. does, because can, and because no one stops .
So by giving up Ukraine ( hope this doesn't happen), or freezing the war, the West won't achieve anything but a delay of the inevitable - a continuation of Invasion into Europe. Yes, just like with Hitler. really tired bringing up, really, but seems the history is circular, and the West is not moved by getting slaughtered. Only by history references.
And thus, Putin needs to face the same fate as Hitler, because already commits the unimaginable - a genocide, trying to terrorize into submission and capitulation. And the West watches, trembling in fear, not even able to send some jets. Only 'thoughts and prayers'. UN is particularly pathetic, in opinion, and needs to be disbanded by how worthless is.
If not stopped here, the big bad WWIII will happen regardless. The only way to avoid is to help win and see Russia and fascist regime crumble. Cause if lose, next on curriculum.
